Glossary heading

Mobile money

A cash balance held against a phone number, which is how betting money moves in Ghana in both directions.

Also written: MoMo, wallet, e-money

Three networks carry it and every book on this register takes at least one of them. Deposits land instantly and withdrawals return to the same number the account was opened with, which is a fraud control rather than a courtesy and catches people who register on one number and try to be paid on another.

Two things sit above the wallets and belong to the country rather than to any bookmaker. The first is that money moves between the three networks through a national switch, so the network a payout lands on is rarely the network it has to stay on. The second is the ceiling, and it is the one that actually binds a large win: a wallet at the lowest identity tier cannot receive more than a set amount in a day or in a month, and no bookmaker can lift that.

The transfer levy that used to sit on top of these movements was repealed on 2 April 2025, and charging entities were told to stop deducting it the same day. No government levy sits on a mobile money transfer today.
